Biography
Anton Christoforidis was a Greek boxer who won European middleweight honors before becoming an NBA world light-heavyweight champion in 1941. Boxing records connect him with Geneva, Ohio, and give Mersin as his birthplace.
His meeting with Bep van Klaveren on November 14, 1938, in Rotterdam is central to identifying the “Christoforides” named in the Dutch newsreel. Christoforidis won that contest and the European middleweight title. The film catalog warns that its title is wrong: Van Klaveren lost.
Christoforidis later defeated Melio Bettina for the NBA light-heavyweight championship on January 13, 1941. NBA here means the National Boxing Association, not the basketball league. His championship reign ended in 1941.
Anton, Antonios, Christoforidis and the catalog’s Christoforides require careful cross-referencing. The consulted sources do not establish a wholly different hidden surname. Christo the Fisto is a documented boxing alias rather than a birth identity. Exact personal dates are omitted here where secondary records diverge.
