Chuck Norris' Real Name: Carlos Ray Norris

Chuck Norris → Carlos Ray Norris

Quick answer: Chuck Norris was born Carlos Ray Norris on March 10, 1940, in Ryan, Oklahoma. He picked up the nickname "Chuck" in the Air Force. He died on March 19, 2026, in Hawaii, at age 86 (AP; Britannica).

How Carlos became Chuck

Norris was named Carlos after a minister his father knew. He grew up poor, moving between Oklahoma and Torrance, California. He joined the U.S. Air Force in 1958 and was sent to Osan Air Base in South Korea. Fellow airmen started calling him "Chuck," and he began training in Tang Soo Do there.

Martial-arts champion

After his discharge, Norris opened karate schools in California and won major tournaments, including the World Professional Middleweight Karate championship, which he held from 1968 until he retired undefeated in 1974. He founded his own system, Chun Kuk Do, in 1990. He held black belts in several disciplines, including Tang Soo Do, taekwondo, Brazilian jiu-jitsu and judo (Martial Arts Professional).

Film career

His friend Bruce Lee cast him as the villain Colt in The Way of the Dragon (1972), fighting Lee in the Roman Colosseum. Encouraged by his student Steve McQueen, Norris became an action lead with Good Guys Wear Black (1978), The Octagon (1980), Lone Wolf McQuade (1983), the Cannon Films hits Missing in Action (1984), Invasion U.S.A. (1985) and The Delta Force (1986), and Code of Silence (1985). His last major role was The Expendables 2 (2012).

Walker, Texas Ranger and the "facts"

Norris starred as Cordell Walker in CBS's Walker, Texas Ranger for nine seasons and 203 episodes (1993–2001), plus a 2005 TV movie (Variety). Starting in 2005, the "Chuck Norris facts" internet meme, joke lines exaggerating his toughness, made him a pop-culture legend to a new generation. He was also a long-time Total Gym spokesman and a columnist.

Death and legacy

Norris died on March 19, 2026. He was survived by his wife, Gena O'Kelley Norris, and children including Eric and Mike Norris and twins Dakota and Danilee. He and Gena had founded the nonprofit Kickstart Kids, which teaches martial arts to young people. He was posthumously inducted into the Official Taekwondo Hall of Fame on August 15, 2026 (Martial Arts Professional; KPRC Houston).
