Early life

Bands
- Big Black (1981–87): an abrasive post-hardcore band built around a drum machine. Its albums were Atomizer (1986) and Songs About Fucking (1987).
- Rapeman (1987–89): a short-lived trio. Albini later expressed regret over the band's name and some of his past provocations.
- Shellac (1992–2024): with Bob Weston and Todd Trainer, releasing At Action Park (1994), 1000 Hurts (2000) and others. Their final album, To All Trains, came out ten days after his death.
The engineer, not "producer"
Albini preferred the credit "recorded by" and refused royalties, charging a flat fee instead. He favored analog tape, live takes and minimal processing. Records he engineered include:
- Pixies, Surfer Rosa (1988)
- PJ Harvey, Rid of Me (1993)
- Nirvana, In Utero (1993)
- The Breeders, Pod; Jimmy Page & Robert Plant, Walking into Clarksdale (1998)
- Joanna Newsom, Ys, and many records by The Jesus Lizard, Slint and others
He founded the Chicago studio Electrical Audio in 1997. His 1993 essay "The Problem with Music," which criticized major-label economics, is still widely shared.
Later years
Albini was also a skilled poker player and won World Series of Poker bracelets in 2018 and 2022. He was married to filmmaker Heather Whinna.
