Adrian Mateos, 'The Closer,' Wins Ninth PGT Title

Spanish poker pro Adrián Mateos Díaz, nicknamed 'The Closer,' won Event 5 of the Poker Masters on October 18, 2026. Card Player reported it was his ninth PokerGO Tour title, his fourth of 2026, and put him in the lead for the Poker Masters purple jacket. Earlier in 2026 he became the youngest player ever to win six WSOP bracelets.

Adrián Mateos Díaz, the Spanish pro known as "The Closer," added another trophy to a huge 2026 on October 18 by winning Event 5 of the Poker Masters.

The news

Card Player reported that the win gave Mateos his ninth career PokerGO Tour (PGT) title and his fourth of the 2026 season. It also moved him to the front of the race for the Poker Masters purple jacket, the prize for the series' top overall performer.

The result adds to a season that was already one of his best. In June 2026 he won his sixth World Series of Poker bracelet, making him the youngest player ever to reach six (Wikipedia). As of October 23, Card Player's 2026 Player of the Year leaderboard had him 10th, with 5,684 points, five titles and 20 final tables for $8,454,327 in qualifying winnings.

Real name and nicknames

His full name is Adrián Mateos Díaz. In poker he goes by Adrian Mateos, and he has two other names worth knowing:

  • "The Closer." He earned the nickname after his 2015 win at the European Poker Tour Grand Final (Wikipedia). A ninth PGT title suggests the name still fits.
  • "Amadi_017." That's his online screen name. Like many modern pros, Mateos built his game online before he was famous at live tables, and serious online players often know the screen name before the face.

Nicknames like these are a big part of poker culture. Some come from a famous win, some from online handles, and a few from stranger places, such as the fake ID behind Phil Ivey's "No Home Jerome." We trace that history in How Poker Players Got Their Nicknames.

Why it's a big deal

Mateos was already a star before 2026. He won the WSOP Europe Main Event at 19, and Wikipedia lists him fourth on poker's all-time live money list with more than $70 million in earnings; Card Player's own all-time list showed $73,073,984 when we checked in October 2026.

Few players his age have results on this level. Six bracelets, nine PGT titles and an EPT Grand Final put him in the conversation with the most decorated tournament players of his generation.

What's next

The PGT purple jacket and the year-end Player of the Year races are still open. The World Series of Poker's 2026 Player of the Year race ends at WSOP Paradise, December 3 to 17, 2026 (WSOP.com), so the standings can still change before the year is out.

We'll update this story as the season ends. For his full career stats, see the Adrian Mateos bio, and browse our other poker player bios for the real names behind the screen names.
