In short: The Philadelphia "house of horrors" case centers on 417 W. Chew Ave. in Olney. Police and the FBI have linked seven missing women to the house; five are feared dead and two are missing. Investigators reportedly suspect the late R.C. Horsch (died 2025, never charged). His son Eugene Horsch faces only federal gun and fake-ID charges and has not been charged in any woman's disappearance or death. No human remains have been publicly reported found.
Quick answer: R.C. Horsch (Ray Horsch) was a Philadelphia-area adult filmmaker, self-published author and ex-convict. He died in 2025 at 82 and was never charged with or tried for any killing. Since June 2026, Philadelphia police and the FBI have linked seven missing women to his former home at 417 W. Chew Ave. in Olney. Police fear five of them are dead. Police have named three of the women they believe are dead: Gabrielle Amarando, Maribel Fresses and Nicole Fusaro. Two more, Amy McHale and Blair Tonzelli, are still listed as missing. His son, Eugene Horsch, 44, owns the house and is in federal custody on separate gun and fake-ID charges. He has not been charged in connection with any of the women, his lawyer denies any involvement, and he is presumed innocent. As of late October 2026, no human remains have been publicly reported found at the property. CBS Philadelphia, NBC10, FOX 29
A note on fairness. Raymond Horsch is dead and was never tried, so nothing in this article has been proven against him in court. What investigators believe about him is attributed to them throughout. Eugene Horsch is accused only of the weapons, drug and false-ID offenses described below, and he is presumed innocent of those pending charges. This piece is based on reporting from police briefings and major Philadelphia news outlets. Where outlets disagree, we say so.

The Olney "house of horrors" on Chew Avenue
Olney is a working neighborhood in North Philadelphia: rowhouses, corner stores, people who have lived on the same block for decades. "I have been here all these years, it was nice and quiet, I didn't hear nothing, now all of sudden everything pops off," longtime resident Ricky Mai told FOX 29. FOX 29
The three-story house at 417 W. Chew Ave. now has a nickname, the "house of horrors." Neighbor Joel Wells told CBS Philadelphia that's what he was calling it himself: "You never know who you're living next to." CBS Philadelphia Since the summer, the house has been under 24-hour surveillance, wrapped in police tape and taken apart down to its drywall, plaster and floors. Its backyard has been dug up layer by layer, the way investigators would work a mass grave. NBC10, CBS Philadelphia
It all started with a traffic stop near the Liberty Bell.
How the case began: the June 2026 Independence Mall stop
On a June day in 2026, a park ranger near 6th and Market streets, by Independence Mall, noticed something suspicious about a parked vehicle. Inside were 44-year-old Eugene Horsch and a woman whom authorities have not named. According to CBS Philadelphia, authorities found Horsch carrying a fake DEA badge and two guns with obliterated serial numbers. The woman had an ID that belonged to a woman reported missing in 2023, and she said she got it from Horsch. A World Cup match was being played in the city that day, and police said that timing, together with the evidence, gave them "significant concerns." They got multiple warrants. CBS Philadelphia
Date note: CBS Philadelphia dates the stop June 19. WHYY says Horsch was arrested June 18 outside Independence Mall. WHYY
According to CBS Philadelphia, the woman later told investigators that "bad things happened" to people in the basement of Horsch's home. CBS Philadelphia FOX 29 reported that the name on the woman's ID was Blair Tonzelli, who has been missing for several years. FOX 29
What police found inside 417 W. Chew Ave.
Police searched the house on June 26. CBS Philadelphia reported they found documents connected to missing people, a "laboratory" of toxic chemicals spread across several hidden spaces, and a 55-gallon drum hooked up to hoses and other piping. CBS Philadelphia FOX 29 reported that searchers also recovered weapons, drug-related evidence, electronic devices and urns of cremated remains. FOX 29 WHYY reported five urns in the basement that investigators believe hold human ashes. Deputy Commissioner Frank Vanore said R.C. Horsch's own remains are believed to be in one of them. WHYY Authorities have not said publicly whose ashes are in the other urns.
Law enforcement sources told CBS Philadelphia that detectives got a search warrant to examine the pipes for signs of "wet cremation," a process that breaks down human remains with chemicals. In October, sources confirmed that two clogged sewer laterals connecting the house to the main sewer line had been removed and sent to a lab. One of them had been abandoned because it was clogged. Sources would not say what the pipes might contain. CBS Philadelphia WHYY reported that the pipe excavation, done with help from the Philadelphia Water Department, turned up chemicals, drugs, guns and almost 120 pieces of ballistic evidence. WHYY
A source described the basement to CBS Philadelphia as divided into several rooms and looking like "an old high school science lab." CBS Philadelphia
A million files
The digital evidence is what turned a weapons arrest into one of the city's most closely watched investigations. Police say they recovered more than 1 million pieces of digital evidence: more than 600,000 images, 70,000 videos and 10,000-plus pages of writings, manuscripts and drawings. FOX 29, CBS Philadelphia More than 100 FBI agents and analysts from around the country were brought in to go through it. CBS Philadelphia As of FOX 29's September 18 report, investigators had reviewed only about 30% of it. FOX 29
Police have identified 58 women in the images. They say five appear to be lifeless. FOX 29, CBS Philadelphia WHYY reported that officials confirmed videos of several unconscious women in files dating back to 2017, and that some of the videos were made by R.C. Horsch. WHYY
Vanore described one video in which, he said, the elder Horsch appears to put a zip tie around a woman's neck after she becomes unconscious. He was careful about what that does and doesn't prove: "I've got to caution you and emphasize we did never recover a body here. Mr. Horsch is deceased at this time, and we still need to find evidence to corroborate what appears to have occurred in this video." WHYY Police later identified the woman in that video as Nicole Fusaro. FOX 29
The missing women linked to the Horsch house
Each name below belongs to a real person with family and friends who have waited years for answers. We name only the women police or major outlets have publicly identified, and we don't describe the images.
Believed dead (police statements; no remains recovered)
Gabrielle Amarando. She disappeared in Philadelphia in 2012, at age 22. 6abc, FOX 29 She was among the first women police identified from the digital evidence, at an August 12 press conference. Police said the files included videos of her alive and images in which she appeared to be dead. A childhood friend called her "a wonderful person." Her body has not been found. CBS Philadelphia A friend told 6abc that loved ones grew more worried when they stopped hearing from her. 6abc
Maribel Fresses. She was reported missing in 2018, at 27. In August, police said digital evidence appeared to show her body. Her remains have not been recovered, and police haven't announced a cause or manner of death. FOX 29
Nicole Fusaro. She was reported missing from Kensington in 2018, at 27. Police linked her to the house in mid-September and identified her as the woman in the video they say shows R.C. Horsch strangling a woman. FOX 29, CBS Philadelphia Her cousin, Jonathan Halloran-Koren, told FOX 29 he is putting together a team for an independent investigation into how her case was handled: "I am appalled by the way our family has been treated and by the complete lack of basic dignity and consideration shown to us as the family of a homicide victim." FOX 29
Two unidentified women. Investigators say two more women, one around 25 and one not yet identified, appear unconscious with signs of injury in the images. Police count them among the five women feared dead. Their names have not been released. FOX 29, CBS Philadelphia
Missing
Amy McHale. She was married to R.C. Horsch at one point and has been missing since 2016. Her family told CBS Philadelphia that her last known location was the Chew Avenue house. CBS Philadelphia, FOX 29 The FBI went back to the house in July for more evidence on the disappearance of a woman last reported there about a decade ago. CBS Philadelphia
Blair Tonzelli. She has been missing for several years. Her name was on the ID carried by the woman stopped with Eugene Horsch in Center City. FOX 29 CBS Philadelphia says the ID belonged to a woman reported missing in 2023. CBS Philadelphia
How the count works: police say seven women are linked to the house. Five are feared dead (Amarando, Fresses, Fusaro and two unnamed women), and two are missing (McHale and Tonzelli). CBS Philadelphia, NBC10
Who was R.C. Horsch? Filmmaker, author, ex-convict
Names and aliases: His full legal name was Raymond Charles Horsch; he went by "R.C." CBS Philadelphia He was credited and interviewed as "Ray Horsch." The Rialto Report While he was a fugitive in New Zealand, he used stolen and assumed identities. The Inquirer reported that he took on the identity of a real chemist, and Newsweek, citing the Inquirer, said he used "multiple aliases." Those alias names have not been published in the sources we reviewed. Inquirer, Newsweek
Engineer to filmmaker
The Philadelphia Inquirer describes Raymond Horsch as "a bookish engineer from Bucks County." He made his first film, The Erotic Memoirs of a Male Chauvinist Pig, in 1973. The Inquirer reports it was financed by Sam "The Barber" LaRussa, a mob associate who owned a nightclub and was a friend of Nicodemo "Little Nicky" Scarfo. The Inquirer says the film depicts rape, bondage and a violent relationship with a drug-addicted woman. Inquirer According to The Rialto Report, it was shot in Philadelphia in February 1973 with New York performers including Georgina Spelvin and Tina Russell. The Rialto Report
In the 1990s he returned to filmmaking, directing a series of "couples oriented" documentaries called Lovers for Candida Royalle's Femme distribution company. He later directed films that, in The Rialto Report's words, "drew accusations of misogyny." The Rialto Report Newsweek, summarizing the Inquirer's investigation, says that over five decades his work showed sexual and violent scenes and often featured women struggling with drug addiction. Newsweek
"Sociopathic villain," in his own words
In a December 2013 Rialto Report podcast titled "Ray Horsch: Sociopathic Villain," he described himself as a "banknote forger, artist, writer, drug smuggler, art forger, army deserter, fugitive, photographer, sociopath, ex-convict." The Rialto Report In a clip CBS Philadelphia reported, he talks about playing villains in adult films: "I, of course, was kind of a natural as a perverted serial killer, wasn't much of a stretch at all." CBS Philadelphia WHYY reported that Deputy Commissioner Vanore called him a "self-described sociopath." WHYY
The books
He self-published novels, including the 2014 book Empathy. CBS Philadelphia reviewed hundreds of pages and described the book's overview as presenting it as the autobiographical memoir of a "caring, empathetic serial killer." In one chapter, the narrator claims to have strangled a woman and dissolved her body with chemicals. CBS Philadelphia Newsweek, citing the Inquirer, says his novels include an "empathetic" serial killer who kills drug-addicted women "to end their suffering." Newsweek The books are fiction, or are presented as fiction. No public source has shown that any specific passage describes a real event.
Criminal record (documented)
- Counterfeiting. Newsweek reports a two-year sentence for a 1974 counterfeiting conviction. Newsweek The Inquirer places the counterfeiting bust in "the late 1970s." Inquirer The sources disagree on the date.
- Meth lab and fugitive years. The Inquirer reports that a few years after the counterfeiting case, he was arrested for running a methamphetamine lab. He skipped bail and fled to New Zealand, where he used a stolen chemist's identity and a forged Stanford diploma to work at a chemical plant in the port city of Timaru. He was eventually caught there with five fake passports, fled back to the U.S., was arrested in Florida and was returned to Philadelphia. Inquirer Newsweek reports a four-year sentence after his 1985 extradition to Philadelphia on drug-manufacturing charges. Newsweek
- 2009 marijuana grow. According to 6abc, in July 2009 police found a grow operation of more than 200 plants in the basement of his home in Chalfont, Bucks County. 6abc The Rialto Report says police were called about a suspected intruder, found the grow in the basement, and caught Horsch after he ran into nearby fields. Press reports at the time said police also found an M-1 carbine and ammunition. An allegation that he tried to lure a child into his car was later, in The Rialto Report's words, "proved to be unfounded." The Rialto Report He received a 54-month federal sentence, with credit for time served in Bucks County jail. 6abc, Newsweek
Family
He and Anna Ferkuniak had a son, Eugene, born in New Zealand in 1981 while Raymond was a fugitive. Ferkuniak died of an accidental overdose in 1989 with 7-year-old Eugene in the room, and Raymond raised him after that. Newsweek, citing the Inquirer The Inquirer reports that he married a longtime girlfriend who gave birth to Eugene while he was a fugitive. Inquirer He was also once married to Amy McHale, who has been missing since 2016. FOX 29
Death and suspicion
R.C. Horsch died in 2025 at 82. NBC10 On October 2, 2026, multiple law enforcement sources told CBS Philadelphia that investigators believe he may have been a serial killer. Sources described him as someone who preyed on vulnerable women, many of them struggling with addiction. CBS Philadelphia That is an investigative theory from unnamed sources. It is not a finding. He was never charged, and he can't be tried. Calling him "Satan" or "the devil in disguise" are characterizations by people interviewed, including an unnamed woman who spoke to CBS Philadelphia. They are not evidence. CBS Philadelphia
On rumors: we found no credible source tying this case to the occult or any secret society, so this article doesn't cover those claims.
