Quick answer: Russell Brand's real name is Russell Edward Brand. He was born June 4, 1975, in Grays, Essex, and has always performed under his birth name. On Thursday, November 5, 2026, a jury at Southwark Crown Court in London found him guilty of one count of rape and three counts of sexual assault against four women (CPS; AP). Why the court record uses his name as-is

Many celebrities we cover appear in court under a legal name that differs from their stage name. Brand doesn't: the defendant in R v Brand is the same Russell Brand known from television and film. His public name and legal name match, so there is no "real name" twist in this case. Viral posts that give him a different birth name are wrong (Britannica; Library of Congress).

The verdict

  • Guilty: one count of rape and three counts of sexual assault, involving four women, for offences between 2004 and 2009 (CPS).
  • Not guilty: two further counts of rape and one count of attempted indecent assault (BBC).
  • The jury deliberated for about eight and a half hours after a four-week trial.
  • Brand denied all charges.

The rape conviction relates to a woman he met after his Scandalous show at the Hammersmith Apollo in 2009. The sexual assault convictions relate to a woman he met in a bar in 2004, a woman at a radio station around the same period, and a woman he worked with on a Channel 4 project in 2009 (ABC News Australia). Under UK law, all complainants have lifelong anonymity.

The CPS's David Roberts said the case "sends a clear message that fame and status do not change the fundamental issue of consent," and said he hoped it would encourage other victims to come forward (CPS).

What happens next

Judge Joel Bennathan revoked Brand's bail and remanded him in custody, saying the rape verdict meant a significant prison term was inevitable. Sentencing is set for Monday, November 9, 2026 (AP). Separately, the Metropolitan Police say an investigation into complaints from two other women is ongoing, and files have gone to the CPS. No decision on charges has been announced (Telegraph).
