What Sophie Cunningham told Theo Von
Cunningham is known for telling stories with no filter, and this one is a mix of chaos and comedy. Per the clip description, the team was mobbed at an airport and had no proper security. Someone acting as security handled Brittney Griner's Louis Vuitton luggage and threw it, and the bags hit Cunningham in the face. She says she woke up with a black eye.
The Short's title calls it a $5,000 bag; that figure comes from the Short's uploader and isn't confirmed in the clip description.
The bigger issue: WNBA travel and security
Griner's travel has drawn attention since her 2022 detention in Russia and return to the U.S., and a June 2023 Dallas airport confrontation by a social media provocateur sharpened calls for better protection (WNBA statement). In May 2024 the WNBA announced a full league-wide charter flight program (WNBA). Cunningham's story is funny in the telling, but it also shows why players pushed for safer travel.
Who is Sophie Cunningham?
Sophie Cunningham is a WNBA guard who played college basketball at Missouri and spent her early pro years with the Phoenix Mercury, where she was Griner's teammate, before joining the Indiana Fever in a 2025 trade (WNBA.com) (Wikipedia).
