history
Oda Nobunaga (織田信長) 本名: Kippōshi (childhood); Oda Saburō Nobunaga (吉法師 / 織田三郎信長)
Answer: Oda Nobunaga's childhood name was Kippōshi (吉法師). As an adult he was known by the common name Saburō and the formal given name Nobunaga.
Nobunaga was born in 1534 in Owari Province, son of the warlord Oda Nobuhide. His childhood name was 吉法師 (Kippōshi). At his coming of age around 1546 he took the adult name 信長 (Nobunaga), with the common name 三郎 (Saburō). He also used court-style titles such as 上総介 (Kazusa-no-suke).
In his youth he was nicknamed 尾張の大うつけ, "the big fool of Owari," for his odd behavior; this nickname appears in the chronicle Shinchō Kōki, written by his retainer Ōta Gyūichi.
He defeated Imagawa Yoshimoto at Okehazama (1560), began unifying Japan under the motto 天下布武, and died in the Honnō-ji Incident in 1582, betrayed by Akechi Mitsuhide.
