Tito's Real Name: Josip Broz
Tito's real name was Josip Broz.
Tito, the leader of Yugoslavia from 1945 until his death in 1980, was born Josip Broz on May 7, 1892, in Kumrovec, Croatia, then part of Austria-Hungary. He was the seventh of 15 children of a Croatian father and Slovene mother.
As a Communist operative in the 1930s, when the party was banned in Yugoslavia, he took the name "Tito" as one of his underground aliases. He kept it and became known worldwide as Josip Broz Tito. During World War II his identity was so obscure that some outsiders doubted he was a real person.
Tito led the Partisan resistance against the Axis occupation and later broke with Stalin in 1948. His one-party government jailed political opponents, including at the Goli Otok prison camp.
