Biography
William Harrison Dempsey became one of the most recognizable American sports figures of the 1920s. Born in Manassa, Colorado, he fought under the name Jack Dempsey and developed a reputation for an aggressive, bobbing-and-weaving style.
The International Boxing Hall of Fame describes his youth traveling through the American West and his career’s improvement under manager Jack Kearns. PBS documents the progression from the nickname Kid Blackie to the professional name Jack.
Dempsey won the heavyweight championship from Jess Willard in Toledo, Ohio, on July 4, 1919. Willard was knocked down repeatedly in the opening round, and the contest ended when he did not come out for the fourth. Describing it as ending after three rounds avoids confusing the completed rounds with the moment the stoppage became final.
Dempsey’s later title bouts helped turn boxing into a major commercial spectacle. He held the heavyweight championship until 1926. His ring identity should not be confused with the earlier boxer Jack “Nonpareil” Dempsey.
The birth-name answer is William Harrison Dempsey. Jack Dempsey is the professional name; Manassa Mauler is a nickname linked to his Colorado birthplace.
