Biography
James Jackson Jeffries held the world heavyweight championship from 1899 until his retirement in 1905. He won the title from Bob Fitzsimmons and defeated prominent opponents including James J. Corbett.
His nickname came from his work as a boilermaker. The International Boxing Hall of Fame describes his early working life and boxing development after his family moved from Ohio to the Los Angeles area. The Village of Carroll, Ohio, also connects the nickname to that occupation.
Jeffries returned from retirement to challenge Jack Johnson in Reno on July 4, 1910. The contest was promoted amid racist demands for a white boxer to defeat the first Black heavyweight champion. Johnson won in the fifteenth round. That context should remain part of an honest account rather than being replaced by a nostalgic rivalry narrative.
After boxing, Jeffries was associated with a California ranch, exhibitions and other business ventures. He died on March 3, 1953.
James J. is an abbreviation of James Jackson, while Jim is a familiar form of James. The Boilermaker is an occupational nickname, not evidence of a different birth identity.
