Biography
Luc van Dam was a Dutch middleweight boxer born in Schiedam on October 23, 1920. A Dutch biographical account describes him as a cool, quick stylist who became a professional in 1938 and won the national middleweight championship in 1940.
His career included European title challenges and an important domestic rivalry with Bep van Klaveren. In August 1947 he lost the Dutch title to Van Klaveren in Rotterdam’s Feyenoord stadium. He regained it in a return contest in Amsterdam the following month.
That distinction matters when labeling archival film. A newsreel of the Rotterdam meeting should not be assigned the result of the later Amsterdam rematch. The Polygoon film catalog identifies the stadium contest as a Van Klaveren victory.
Van Dam retired from professional boxing in the early 1950s. The Dutch account records his death in Rotterdam on July 21, 1976.
Luc van Dam should remain the canonical spelling. The surname’s familiar appearance elsewhere in entertainment is not evidence of a relationship with another public figure.
