Quick answer

Doyle Brunson's full name was Doyle Frank Brunson (August 10, 1933 – May 14, 2023). He was born in Longworth, Texas, and was known as "Texas Dolly" and "The Godfather of Poker." A former Texas road gambler, he won the WSOP Main Event in 1976 and 1977, won 10 WSOP bracelets, entered the Poker Hall of Fame in 1988, and wrote Super/System.

Real name and nickname

Brunson was born Doyle Frank Brunson in Longworth, Fisher County, Texas. "Texas Dolly" is usually said to come from a mispronunciation of "Doyle." Treat that origin as commonly told; we haven't confirmed it in a primary source. Later in life players also called him "The Godfather of Poker."

From athlete to rounder

Brunson was a standout athlete at Sweetwater High School and Hardin-Simmons University in Abilene. The NBA's Minneapolis Lakers were reportedly interested in him before a knee injury ended his basketball career. He earned a bachelor's degree in 1954 and a master's the next year. As a salesman for Burroughs Corporation, he won more than a month's salary in a seven-card stud game. Brunson's own telling puts it on his first day; treat that as anecdote. He soon quit to play poker full time.

He started in the illegal games on Exchange Avenue in Fort Worth, then moved to the Midland-Odessa area. There he teamed up with Thomas "Amarillo Slim" Preston and Bryan "Sailor" Roberts. The three shared one bankroll for about six years and traveled the Texas Circuit together. They went broke together on an early Las Vegas trip and then stopped playing as partners.

Road stories (Brunson's own accounts): In his autobiography The Godfather of Poker, Brunson describes a farmhouse game near Austin that was robbed by seven men with shotguns. The robbers made the players strip. He also described a player being shot and killed during a game at another table (Texas Monthly, 2022). These are first-person accounts, not court records.
