Biography
Jack Cushing is identified alongside Mike Leonard in an early filmed boxing contest made for the Kinetoscope. The film was photographed on June 14, 1894, in Edison’s Black Maria studio in West Orange, New Jersey. William Heise operated the camera, and W. K. L. Dickson supervised the production.
The Edison catalog advertised a six-round contest and offered its rounds separately. The Library of Congress preserves only a portion of one round. A short surviving extract therefore does not represent the complete original event.
Cushing’s name is secure because the archival record explicitly lists him as a participant. His fuller personal identity is less well established in the sources used here. “Jack” should not automatically be expanded to John, and no nickname or birth date should be supplied simply to make the profile look complete.
