Claude is the silent protagonist of Grand Theft Auto III, the 2001 game that took the series into full 3D and changed open-world games. He never speaks a line, and the game never gives his surname. Rockstar's later material and the community settled on "Claude," the name used in San Andreas.

GTA III opens with a betrayal. During a bank robbery in Liberty City, Claude's girlfriend and partner Catalina shoots him and leaves him for dead, then runs off with her new partner Miguel. Claude is arrested, but he escapes when the prison convoy is ambushed. He escapes alongside 8-Ball, a demolitions expert who introduces him to the city's underworld.

From there, Claude works his way through Liberty City's criminal world. He takes jobs from the Leone Mafia family, including Luigi Goterelli, Joey Leone, Toni Cipriani and Don Salvatore Leone. Later he works for the Yakuza, corrupt cop Ray Machowski and the businessman Donald Love. Each new employer moves him to a new part of the city and away from the one before. Through it all, his real goal is to find Catalina, who is now tied to the Colombian Cartel and its drug, SPANK.

The game ends with a showdown with Catalina and the rescue of Maria Latore, Salvatore's girlfriend. Claude stays silent to the end, and the final moments of the game are among the best-known in the series.

Claude makes a short return in San Andreas, where he appears as Catalina's partner in a set of missions before the two head to Liberty City, setting up GTA III's opening.

Because he's silent, Claude is often described as the purest "player avatar" in GTA. His game still defines the series: a big city, open-ended crime, and a story driven by revenge.
