Bio
Mike is the protagonist of Grand Theft Auto Advance, the 2004 Game Boy Advance entry developed by Digital Eclipse for Rockstar. The game is set in Liberty City about a year before the events of GTA III, and it uses a top-down view like the original GTA games, combined with the 3D-era map and characters.
Spoiler warning: this bio discusses Advance's main plot.
At the start of the story, Mike is a small-time criminal who wants out of Liberty City. He and his friend and partner Vinnie plan one last round of jobs to raise money so they can leave town. That plan falls apart when Vinnie seems to die in a car bomb. Mike vows revenge and spends most of the game hunting for whoever killed his friend, working for a string of Liberty City crime figures along the way. Some of them are familiar to GTA III players, including 8-Ball.
The twist is that Vinnie isn't dead. He faked his death to skip town with the pair's money, and he kills other contacts, including the bartender Jonnie and the Cartel leader Cisco, so Mike won't find out. Mike finally tracks him down and kills him. So Mike's revenge story turns into a story about betrayal by the person he trusted most. That theme of a partner turning on the hero appears again and again in GTA, from Catalina in GTA III to Big Smoke in San Andreas.
Mike is less famous than the console-era leads, partly because Advance was a handheld game that sold mostly to dedicated fans. He's still officially part of the Liberty City timeline, and his story fills in what the city's underworld looked like just before Claude arrived in GTA III.
As with most early GTA leads, Advance doesn't have a credited voice performance for Mike, and the game tells its story through text dialogue next to static character portraits.
