Bio

Tommy Vercetti is the protagonist of Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, the 1986-set game that turned GTA's crime story into a neon-soaked tribute to 1980s Miami. He's voiced by Ray Liotta, the star of Goodfellas, and he's the first fully voiced lead in a 3D GTA game.

Tommy's story starts with a release from prison. He did 15 years in Liberty City after a massacre that earned him the nickname "the Harwood Butcher." When he gets out, his old boss Sonny Forelli sends him south to Vice City to run a cocaine deal. The deal is ambushed, Tommy loses the money and the drugs, and Sonny wants them back.

To find out who set him up, Tommy works with the nervous lawyer Ken Rosenberg and the flashy Lance Vance, whose brother died in the ambush. He takes jobs for the city's power players, including drug lord Ricardo Diaz, retired colonel Juan Cortez and real estate man Avery Carrington. Over time he goes from errand boy to rival, takes over Diaz's empire and starts building his own.

The second half of Vice City is about Tommy as a businessman. He buys property across the city, including a strip club, a film studio, a taxi company and an ice cream factory, and each one turns into a criminal operation. Those buys pull Tommy toward his final showdown, and that ending is one of the most famous moments in the series.

Tommy is hot-tempered and ambitious, but he's also loyal to the few people he trusts, and Liotta plays him with tense, explosive energy. Fans still rank Vice City among GTA's best because of Tommy.
