GTA Gameplay: Open World, Wanted Stars, Protagonists and What Rockstar Has Shown for VI

Updated Nov 5, 2026

*Grand Theft Auto* is built around a free-roaming open world, story and side missions, a wanted-star police response, and vehicles and weapons treated as in-game tools. Playable leads went from silent Claude in GTA III to voiced protagonists like Tommy, CJ and Niko, then three switchable leads in GTA V and two leads, Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos, in GTA VI. GTA Online is Rockstar's ongoing multiplayer mode set in the GTA V world. For VI, Rockstar's trailers and Extended Look show dual protagonists in Leonida, modern phones and social-media satire; Rockstar has not announced a VI online mode as of November 5, 2026.

Note: Every character named here is fictional. This page is a game-systems overview drawn from Rockstar Games, Take-Two Interactive and major outlets reporting Rockstar's official material. It is not a real-world how-to. We don't use leaks or rumors.

Quick answer: Grand Theft Auto is built around a free-roaming open world, story and side missions, a wanted-star police response, and vehicles and weapons treated as in-game tools.

Series gameplay pillars

Across the 3D and HD eras, Rockstar's design stays recognizable even when maps and stories change.

Open world

Each mainline game drops you into a large city (or multi-city state) you can explore between missions. Liberty City, Vice City, San Andreas and Los Santos are fictional stand-ins for real U.S. regions. You can drive, walk, listen to radio, talk to NPCs and trigger side activities without following the main plot. The open world is the container; story missions are the spine.

Mission types (as game systems)

Rockstar structures single-player progress around contact missions, story beats and optional side jobs. Typical in-game categories include story missions from named contacts, races and challenges, property or business strands in later titles, and heist-style set pieces that string several objectives together. Exact mission lists differ by game. This page describes those as video-game objectives, not real-world instructions.

Wanted system (stars)

Police attention is shown as a wanted level, usually measured in stars. Higher star counts bring a stronger in-game police response: more units, roadblocks and specialized pursuit at the top end. Losing the wanted level (hiding, leaving the search area, or using in-game tools the manuals describe) returns free roam. The star meter runs from GTA III through GTA V and Online.

Vehicles and weapons as mechanics

Cars, bikes, boats and aircraft are mobility and mission tools. Weapons sit on a selection wheel or inventory as combat options inside the game's rules. Rockstar's manuals and store pages frame both as interactive fiction systems. Damage, wanted heat and mission failure are game rules, not real-world advice.

For who those systems serve as characters, see the GTA characters hub and the GTA characters bios index.

How protagonists changed

Era Playable lead(s) What changed
GTA III (2001) Claude Silent protagonist; story told around him
Vice City (2002) Tommy Vercetti Fully voiced lead (Ray Liotta)
San Andreas (2004) CJ (Carl Johnson) Voiced lead plus RPG-style stats (muscle, fat, skill)
GTA IV (2008) Niko Bellic Voiced immigrant story; moral choice moments
GTA V (2013) Michael, Franklin, Trevor Three protagonists; mid-mission and free-roam character switching
GTA VI (2026) Jason Duval, Lucia Caminos Dual leads; Rockstar presents both as playable

GTA V's switchable trio was the big structural jump: Rockstar let players jump between three story threads and three play styles in one map. GTA VI returns to a couple as co-leads rather than a trio. Full cast credits for earlier games live on our GTA voice actors hub.

GTA Online (high-level overview)

GTA Online launched in October 2013 as the multiplayer companion to Grand Theft Auto V. Players create their own character in the shared Los Santos / Blaine County map and join Rockstar's free updates: heists, businesses, adversarial modes, races and limited-time events, all posted on the Newswire. Story characters such as Franklin and Lamar have returned in expansions (for example The Contract in 2021). Online keeps the same open-world, wanted-star and vehicle language as single-player, in shared sessions under Rockstar's live-service schedule.

This hub does not cover money-making routes, glitches or anything outside Rockstar's published feature descriptions.

GTA VI gameplay: only what Rockstar has shown

Stick to Rockstar's public material: Trailer 1 (December 2023), Trailer 2 and the official People/Places pages (May 2025), An Extended Look (August 27, 2026) and the Launch Trailer (October 15, 2026), plus Take-Two and store listings.

Confirmed or clearly shown:

  • Dual protagonists: Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos are both playable. Rockstar's official summary frames them as a couple caught in a criminal conspiracy across Leonida.
  • Setting as play space: Leonida includes modern Vice City, the Leonida Keys, Grassrivers, Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia and Mount Kalaga National Park (official Places pages).
  • Open-world action in trailers / Extended Look: driving, chases, shootouts, robberies framed as story set pieces, boats and other vehicles, and dense crowds and nightlife.
  • Character switching: Rockstar's Extended Look footage shows control moving between Jason and Lucia during travel and missions (the same family of system GTA V popularized, now with two leads).
  • Phones and social-media satire: Trailers and Extended Look footage show modern phones, filming and in-world social feeds as part of Leonida's culture. Treat deeper "quest from a feed" claims as unconfirmed unless Rockstar states them.
  • Single-player at launch: PlayStation and Xbox listings describe a single-player experience. Rockstar has not announced a GTA VI online / multiplayer mode.

Not confirmed by Rockstar (so we don't claim them): PC release, map size, mission count, full combat-stat breakdowns, or any leaked mechanic. FAQ

How does the GTA wanted level work?

It is an in-game star meter. More stars mean a stronger police response inside the game. Clearing the stars returns you to free roam. It is a video-game rule set, not a real-world guide.

What is GTA Online?

Rockstar's multiplayer mode tied to GTA V, launched in October 2013, with free updates that add activities, vehicles and story content in the shared Los Santos map.

How did GTA V change protagonists?

It introduced three playable leads — Michael, Franklin and Trevor — and let players switch among them during free roam and many missions.

How many protagonists does GTA VI have?

Two: Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos. Both are fictional and both are presented as playable.

What GTA VI gameplay has Rockstar actually shown?

Dual protagonists in Leonida / Vice City, open-world travel and action, character switching between Jason and Lucia, and modern phone / social-media satire in official trailers and the Extended Look. No VI online mode has been announced.

Is this page teaching real crime?

No. It describes fictional game systems only.
