Updated Nov 5, 2026

The most-searched GTA "real names": CJ is Carl Johnson. Big Smoke is Melvin Harris. Sweet is Sean Johnson. Ryder is Lance Wilson. Tommy is Thomas "Tommy" Vercetti. Niko is Niko Bellic. GTA V's leads are Michael De Santa (born Michael Townley), Franklin Clinton and Trevor Philips. GTA VI's two playable leads are Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos. GTA V's leads are Michael De Santa (born Michael Townley), Franklin Clinton and Trevor Philips. GTA VI's two playable leads are Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos. What "real name" means on this site

Rockstar loves street names. Players remember "CJ," "Big Smoke" and "Sweet" long before they remember the police-file or credit spelling. On RealNameOf, real name = the full fictional name used in the game (cutscenes, records, manuals or Rockstar's own profiles). It is not a claim that the character is a real person.

The people who voice or perform those characters are real. Young Maylay (CJ), Clifton Powell (Big Smoke), Ray Liotta (Tommy), Michael Hollick (Niko), Ned Luke, Shawn Fonteno and Steven Ogg (GTA V's trio) and the rest are documented on the GTA voice actors hub. As of November 5, 2026, Rockstar has not announced any GTA VI cast, so we don't list actors for Jason, Lucia or the other Leonida profiles.

Browse every published bio in one list at GTA characters bios or the Grand Theft Auto Characters category. For how those leads play in the open world, see gameplay. For Leonida and the November 19, 2026 launch facts, see GTA VI. Back to the GTA hub.

San Andreas is where nickname searches spike hardest. CJ comes home to Grove Street for his mother's funeral; Sweet leads the Families; Big Smoke and Ryder are the friends who betray him. Those four full names — Carl, Sean, Melvin, Lance — are the ones people type into search boxes years after the game shipped. Tommy Vercetti (Vice City) and Claude (GTA III's silent lead) round out the 3D-era protagonists. Also see Claude Speed from GTA 2 and Mike from GTA Advance when you need the handheld / top-down leads.

GTA V's big name twist is Michael's dual identity: Michael Townley before the FIB deal, Michael De Santa afterward. Franklin and Trevor keep one full name each. Lamar and Lester carry into GTA Online expansions (including The Contract). Character switching among the three leads is covered under gameplay.

GTA VI: Rockstar's eight official profiles only
